The CKD Screening Prioritizer (CSP)

A tool that supports the identification of undiagnosed Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) amongst adults with type 2 diabetes.

Earlier detection of CKD

Potiential to change the disease course

Non-invasive

No biochemical testing required

Minimal resource pre-screening tool

Created using inputs that are all either readily available or easily collected

Targeted CKD screening
Prioritizing patients at highest risk
Reduces screening burden

Enables efficient screening resource allocation

Regular CKD screening is recommended for patients with Type 2 Diabetes

Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure globally, it is reported that approximately 1 in 3 adults with diabetes may have chronic kidney disease.

Early-stage CKD is often asymptomatic, early detection offers the potential to slow the progression and improve patient outcomes. Making screeing vital.

But, in reality, CKD screening doesn’t take place as often as it’s supposed to…

There has been a 40% reduction in Serum Creatinine testing

Screening programs were disrupted during the Covid-19 pandemic

During the Covid-19 pandemic patient reviews were delayed and there was widespread disruption to screening programs, creating a need for a pre-screening solution.

More Information

The burden of diabetes is rising more rapidly in low- and middle-income countries

Lower to middle income countries face huge challenges

Screening every patient isn’t possible in lower to middle income countries due to the limited resources available combined with the increased risk of chronic kidney disease in patients with type 2 diabetes.

A minimal resource model

“We worked closely with clinical experts to determine the model inputs and considered what might be available to a clinician when applying the model. We developed two versions of the model for each marker of kidney function: a minimum-resource model containing only information available at a face-to-face encounter and a second version, encompassing additional information from laboratory test results available from the health record.”
– Dr Camilla Sammut-Powell, Lead Data Scientist at Gendius

CSP, has successfully completed usability testing conducted by its intended user group, healthcare professionals, in line with ISO/IEC 62366 standards. The human factor testing guarantees that CSP is not only user-friendly but also highly effective in real-world healthcare scenarios. The completion of this usability test reaffirms that CSP is easy to use, intuitive, and tailored to meet the specific needs of healthcare professionals, ensuring seamless integration into their workflow. We are confident that our innovative solution will significantly enhance the efficiency of healthcare system and, ultimately, improve patient care.

Our scalable solutions

We have created two solutions for different use cases, both use the same application programming interface (API) to transfer information and algorithms to calculate the results.

Simple and personal

Single patient upload

Enter an individual’s inputs into the web-portal risk calculator.

Suitable for:

  • Smaller clinics
  • Clinics with limited resources
  • Clinics looking to focus on individual patients
Efficient and scalable

Bulk patient upload

Extract inputs from electronic health record systems and calculate risk across patients via an API.

Suitable for:
  • Clinics with an existing Electronic Health Record System and an IT team available.

Innovation at scale

“Our partnership with AstraZeneca offers the opportunity to mitigate the personal and social costs of CKD. By joining agile, innovative companies such as Gendius with AstraZeneca’s ability to scale you get the perfect mix, and we can now offer our CKD pre‑screening algorithm across the globe to ensure more people are identified with CKD earlier, potentially reducing the impact of disease progression. For the patient sitting in the centre of the care ecosystem, the differences are real and tangible.”
– Rory Cameron, CEO & Co-Founder at Gendius
Innovative partnerships are essential to the progress we are making in this area and to allow us to use the evidence we are generating to produce valuable insights. As an example of how we are leveraging this data, through the A.Catalyst Network, we are partnering with Gendius, a UK-based health data and insights business focused on metabolic disease, to improve outcomes for diabetes patients by identifying those at higher risk of CKD earlier through affordable and sustainable cutting-edge technology.”
– Susana Goncalves, CVRM Medical Director, AstraZeneca International.

CKD Screening Prioritizer (CSP) has successfully completed usability testing conducted in accordance with ISO/IEC 62366:2015 standards. The tests were rigorously carried out with healthcare professionals, ensuring that CSP not only meets but exceeds the usability and functionality requirements outlined in the international standard. We are confident that our innovative solution will greatly benefit healthcare professionals and enhance patient care.
